SYRACUSE, New York: Eleven people were injured when a house in Syracuse, in New York state, collapsed this week, officials said.

According to The Associated Press, Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds told reporters at the scene that there were multiple 911 calls to the Syracuse fire services after what sounded like an explosion at a two-story house at around 4 p.m.

Firefighters rushed to the site of the explosion to find many of the victims already in the front yard. They had to extricate one youth out of a car buried in the rubble, he said.

The residents, comprising children and adults, were taken to Upstate University Hospital, where two were in very serious condition, Monds said. Fire officials said all 13 residents had been accounted for, AP said, quoting The Post-Standard.

Police and fire officials will investigate what caused the structure, which dates back to 1920, to collapse. Firefighters also saw downed power lines and a heavy odor of natural gas at the scene.

More than 50 firefighters had to be rotated in and out of the collapsed home due to the extreme heat in Syracuse and other parts of the country.
